Fourth Post 9/23 to 9/26
9/23 - Ketchikan, Alaska weather about 42* to 50* with rain off and on
We had a quick breakfast and then got off the ship to get a shuttle to a local church. The congregation was very welcoming and priest was very upbeat and happy to see us. There was a one-year-old little girl being christened at this mass and that made it very special to all of us visitors. The mass was lovely, the music a little fast paced and unfamiliar to most of us, but we all enjoyed the opportunity to meet the "locals". There were more than 6 shuttles used to get us to the church, so Father asked parishioners to pitch in and drive some of us back to the pier. Dan and I rode with a young father and his 10-year-old daughter, very sweet.
After a quick lunch on the ship, we walked 2 blocks to the site of the Lumber Jack show for which we had tickets. OMG, what fun! There were axe throws, chainsaw cuttings, pole climbing, and log rolling. Thank goodness the rain stopped for the show. We were under a roof but would have been drenched had it rained. Six hunky young lumberjacks made it all the more fun to watch,
9/24 - Juneau, Alaska - weather in low 50's cool, cloudy and foggy
After breakfast, we took a shuttle to a tram that took us to the top of Mount Roberts. The weather cleared in time for us to have spectacular views of the Gustav Inlet and the city of Juneau. In the gift shop, we found key chains that blinked on and off with a name. Found one for "Logan", the 7-year-old little girl we have made friends with in our church at home. She will love it! The only purchase we have made so far.
Back to the ship for lunch, met a man at another table who was telling his companions all about "Jersey City Politics under Frank Hague". Naturally, we had a long conversation with him - small world indeed!
I watched the movie "Book Club" in the cabin and loved it. Dan went to a presentation by the first woman to ever win the Iditarod dog sled race and said she was fabulous.
New friends that we made at the hotel in San Pedro tried to join our table at dinner but were told they could not do that. Apparently, the couple who would make us a table for 6 is still able to join us at any time even though we have never seen them!
The evening entertainment was a very funny comedian from Brooklyn. Made us feel like we were back in NJ!
We did meet John and Suzie after the show, went to the Lido for coffee and wound up talking until 1:30 am...
9/25 - scenic cruising through Glacial Bay - cold temps in the low 40's
It was so cold we had to wear hat, scarf and gloves when out on deck to take pictures and see the Glaciers.
Food continues to be good. Dan took an afternoon nap, while I watched the scenery go by from the balcony and also watched a very sad movie - "The Bookstore".. I am getting too used the happy endings of the Hallmark Movies at home and did NOT like the sad ending of this movie.
Captain announced that we were dropping anchor just before dinner because the inlet into Icy Strait Point is too dangerous to navigate in the dark and fog! Better safe than sorry, I say!
After dinner, I finally made it up to the internet cafe where the attendant told me their computers do not have USB ports, so I can't transfer my pictures from the camera, and they do not have word processing programs to use for writing this blog.
9/26 - Icy Strait Point - rainy and cold - 42*
Had no cell service again all day, even though we were in Alaska. It is too isolated for cell towers, and only ATT was getting service. Looks like we will have to wait until we get to Hawaii on the way home to be able to use our cell phone again.
We did not get off the ship. This is a very small place - 200 families - and nothing to do or see except walk along paths and try to see wildlife. Too COLD for us Floridians.
Had lunch in the dining room - first meal I HATED> It was a pulled pork in a pita, with very little pork and lots of peppers and onions. Went up to the buffet so I could have a good lunch.
Tonight is our reservation for the Specialty DIning Restaurant at the Bayou Cafe. Our waiter was Rinaldo, who was great fun and very kind to explain everything on the menu. The sad information is that we were the ONLY PEOPLE IN THE RESTAURANT. Rinaldo told us they have been very slow on this cruise. Don't know why - food and service were fabulous.
Show after dinner was a juggler/comedian - very, very funny.
